This is the third book in the Mindspeak series.

Wellington Boarding School is home to human clones, an identity that Lexi Matthews once hoped to escape. Shattered by the loss of her father and then her best friend at the hand of Sandra Whitmeyer, the woman from whom she was created, Lexi Matthews is after one thing…

Revenge.

When Sandra sends a series of threatening “gifts” beginning the night of Lexi’s eighteenth birthday, she determines that Sandra will never stop destroying the lives of her and her friends. Once again, Lexi must battle to grasp the complexities of her creation.

As Lexi and Jack discover the horrific details to experiments Sandra is conducting with human life inside her new lab, Lexi decides there’s only one way to end Sandra’s threats. But following that path could cost her everything—including Jack.

(This is the third book in the series, so there are bound to be spoilers from the first two books. Read at your own risk.)

Lexi can’t get free from the evil trying to control her. Evil has a name: Sandra, Lexi’s DNA donor. On Lexi’s eighteenth birthday, Sandra starts sending ‘gifts’ that continue to escalate in severity. With all those that Lexi loves threatened, she wants to take revenge on the one who gave her life but also who is the driving force of destroying her life.

I really loved this book, but since I became a huge fan of Jonas’s, it was also a bit of torture. From the very beginning, I’ve said that there is something about Jake that just makes me not be able to absolutely love as a character. I really enjoyed Lexi and Jake’s relationship and growth in the first two books, but all throughout this book, I screamed for Lexi to want Jonas. That was never going to be a remote possibility because Lexi and Jake are so in love, but I couldn’t help but torture myself with that wish.

Getting past that, everything else about the book was amazing. The ending was very satisfying for the conclusion of the series (even though there is another book after this one). One thing in the end left me with some questions, but I’m sure (well, hoping really) that Heather Sunseri with give us an explanation for it later. I’ll be disappointed if there never is one, but it’s really not a huge thing to get caught up about.

I did actually find a typo in this book. At one point (I should have kept track), the name should have been ‘Alyson,’ but it was written ‘Sandra,’ and knowing the characters, that is a huge difference.

I really liked the introduction of new characters in this book, especially Lexi’s mom. The growth of the other relationships were wonderful as well. I liked seeing more of Coach and Seth. They were great people for Lexi to turn to.

I’m so impressed by how Heather Sunseri dealt with Lexi’s trust issues and grieving in this book. I really identified with her and her pain really came through in this book. When Lexi started pushing everyone away, Heather Sunseri made it so real. Other books so often struggle and fail at conveying these feelings, or they don’t let them last long enough to explore them fully. This book did an excellent job with them and helping Lexi move past them.

I’m so impressed with Heather Sunseri’s work and I really can’t wait to read more of it. She has an amazing imagination to have put this book together and she did a wonderful job in writing it. I’m also excited for the next book, even though it will be a bit of a change because it is focused on Kyle, but I have always wanted to get to know him more.

Mindsurge The Mindspeak Series Book 3 eBook Heather Sunseri Reviews

What I loved about this series was the characters. Heather Sunseri definitely knows how to get a reader invested in a character. And not just the main characters, but ALL of the characters. They were relatable, multi-faceted, three dimensional - and they were the type you LOVE - or love to hate! I love Lexi & Jack - especially Jack!! What a great guy...he knew from the first page what he wanted, and he never flip-flopped, never gave up - even after he achieved it. Sunseri knows how to write a couple that is strong both individually, and as a couple. And they were ever-changing, growing, building on those characteristics and skills that are so cool by the end of the book. I just wish our heroine had figured out what she was capable of a bit sooner, so that she could've used these things earlier - and perfected them as the story went on. There is so much more potential here - and I hope she continues this series further - maybe as adults?? There's more here, and I hope that "Tracked", Sunseri's offshoot of this series, goes further with the powers of the clones' minds!!
I was all set to really like the last book in the Mindspeak series, as I found the first two books (Mindspeak, Mindseige) to be engrossing and highly enjoyable. However, about half-way through this last volume, the story degenerates into utter implausibility. I refer not to the extraordinary abilities of the alpha clones, which I accept as a basic premise of the series, but of the actions of the characters. It reminded me of watching a B-grade horror movie where the protagonists make insanely stupid decisions (“Let's break into the old gothic mansion tonight to see if there really is a psychopathic serial killer living in the attic…”) because otherwise the story would be over without the bloody, bone-chilling climax. Key characters swap allegiances seemingly every other chapter which can be effective only so often before it just becomes annoying. The other thing that gets annoying is the on-going mutual deception between the two main characters, despite repeated assurances that “I promise I’ll be honest with you from now on.” Stop reading when you get to the big inheritance. It goes downhill from there.
Now that Sandra has moved her lab once again, Lexi is consumed with anger and the desire to seek revenge against the woman who created her. When she discovers her father left her quite an inheritance, she must come to terms with her mother being back in her life and continue to figure out her relationship with Jack. Meanwhile, Sandra keeps sending Lexi “presents,” all designed to torment her. And as if that is not enough, someone in her trusted group is betraying the rest of them and someone other than Sandra wants Lexi dead.

I literally could not put this book down. I kept saying to myself, “One more chapter,” and before I knew it, it was almost midnight, I had read a quarter of the book, and had to force myself to put the book down and go to sleep. I woke up early the next morning and went back to reading, and before I knew it, I had read the whole thing. It completely drew me in with non-stop action. I was thoroughly surprised by who was betraying them. I wasn’t totally surprised by who else wanted Lexi dead since it really had to be one of three people. I very highly recommend Mindsurge to young adults and adults alike. Fact is, if you’ve read Mindspeak and Mindsiege, you won’t be able to skip this book!
